At Kirk Merrington we strive to inspire our pupils, equipping them with the confidence and skills to express their individuality through their own works of art. We believe it is important to develop children’s emotional expression through art to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development. Our art and design curriculum provides a carefully structured sequence of learning to ensure progression in knowledge and skills as children move throughout our school. Children are provided with opportunities to become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting and sculpting, as well as other craft skills such as collage and printing. Children are given opportunities to explore and develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and architects.
Our long-term plan has been carefully set out to ensure progression of skills from Reception up to Year 6. Each key stage focuses on different themes to ensure children acquire new knowledge and develop their techniques, including their control and use of different materials. Pupils in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 create sketch books to record their observations and improve their mastery of a variety of art and design techniques. Children are encouraged to develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through the opportunity to ask questions and discuss different works of art.
